Matthew Shelton (Class of 2024) has signed as a transfer to play Division 1 basketball at Liberty University. During his time at ECS, Matthew was a prolific scorer who became the first student athlete to surpass 1,000 points in school history.
Playing the last two years as a starting guard at the University of Charleston, Matthew averaged 12.4 points per game last season, shooting 52% from the floor. That was enough to capture the attention of Liberty’s Head Coach Richie McKay, who snapped him up when Matthew entered the transfer portal. McKay recently stated that “Matt’s a great athlete who has really good range. His quiet disposition and total investment in the team and its success is really going to help our room.”
Making the jump from D2 to D1 means that Matthew will have the opportunity to prove himself against higher quality competition. Over the last few seasons, the Flames have played power conference programs such as Kansas State, North Carolina State, Villanova, Oregon, and Alabama, making it to the NCAA tournament in 2025. With the move to Liberty, Matthew will be playing against Jafet Valencia (ECS Class of 2026) who is joining fellow C-USA rival Delaware this Fall.
